With the film recently arriving on DVD, I had the chance to talk to co-director Scott Waugh and star Lieutenant Commander Rorke Denver about the release, the critical reaction to the film, and the rumors that Waugh would be directing the upcoming video game adaptation, **Need for Speed

Valor fulfills The CW's president Mark Pedowitz's wish for a military drama, and marks the network's third attempt at bringing such content to the lineup. Meanwhile, the reboot of Dynasty is the next in a long line of re-imaginings of television properties for a new generation. The CW is aiming for the 90210 and The OC crowd with the show, making its pairing with the genre-straddling Riverdale on Wednesday nights a smart choice. Life Sentence is also a departure from the network's superhero side of things, as the show centers on a young woman (played by Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale) who discovers she's no longer dying of cancer and now has to live with the consequences of certain decisions she made when under the impression there was no tomorrow (sorry, charming but canceled CW sh


CW president Mike Pedowitz has been working to get a military drama on the network for several years now, and the choice to make Valor , a drama about U.S. Army helicopter pilots who find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy following a mission that went completely awry, the network's first foray into the subgenre an interesting one. For one thing, Valor is late to the party; NBC already launched The Brave and CBS SEAL Team , meaning The CW is entering into a marketplace that may already be saturated with military dramas. And Valor is airing the same night as The Brave , which even with the lead-in of Supergirl might not be a match for NBC's The Voice in terms of bringing in viewers. There's a good chance those who are looking forward to seeing the Girl of Steel return for season 3 will stick around for the premiere of Valor , after all, it also features a strong female lead with Christina Ochoa, who was most recently seen in SYFY's one-and-done grindhouse series Blood Drive . But it seems questionable whether or not that audience will stick around after the somewhat disappointing and muddled pilot epis


Valor certainly looks like something The CW hasn't really attempted before. There are hints of Homeland and Courage Under Fire buried in the very long first look trailer, as the military drama strikes a similar chord in terms of its characters being forced to reconcile with decisions made while in combat overseas. Like Dynasty , there are some questions as to whether or not Valor will connect with the network's younger-skewing audience -- especially since it lacks star power of any kind -- but its central mystery and various dramatic conflicts might be enough to keep viewers enga

It's clear that Valor intends there to be high stakes all around, as that's one of the appeals of military dramas. But in fashioning the series to fit in with The CW's more teen-friendly content, something gets lost in translation. The addition of Nora and Gallo's comrade-in-arms affair complicates matters for both characters, but as is so often the case with television dramas, complication doesn't necessarily result in complexity.
